This article is the data backbone. It stays readable, but it does not guess. Numbers are labeled by year, geography, and units, and definitions are called out when comparisons get tricky.
Data and stats (official sources, clearly dated)
United States: installed utility scale battery capacity (EIA Form 860M)
Using EIA Form 860M monthly generator inventory files (operating units), U.S. utility scale battery totals were approximately:
- Dec 2024: 26.06 GW and 71.32 GWh
- Dec 2025: 42.44 GW and 116.07 GWh That is about 63% year-over-year growth in both MW and MWh (Dec 2024 to Dec 2025), computed from the EIA operating inventory.
Leading states (Dec 2025, EIA 860M operating inventory)
Leading states include California (CA), Texas (TX), Arizona (AZ), Nevada (NV), Florida (FL), New Mexico (NM), and Oklahoma (OK).

Duration distribution (Dec 2025, MW-weighted)
For the portion of the EIA operating inventory where both MW and MWh are reported (about 97% of MW), the MW-weighted duration mix is roughly:
- ≤ 1 hour: ~17.8%
- 1-2 hours: ~23.4%
- 2-4 hours: ~51.5%
- 4-6 hours: ~4.1%
- 6-8 hours: ~0.3%

Chart description: If you plotted U.S. installed battery MW by duration bucket over time, you would see a steep rise in total MW through 2024-2025, with the center of mass remaining in the 2-4 hour class, and a smaller but visible tail of shorter-duration systems used for fast services.
Germany: large battery storage status and pipeline
Germany’s grid regulator, Bundesnetzagentur, reports that large battery storage systems (> 1 MW) in Germany total 2.4 GW and 3.2 GWh in operation (as of 15 Oct 2025), with 5.0 GW more “in planning.” It also reports 650 grid connection inquiries for large-scale storage totaling 226 GW.
Europe and UK: official snapshots
- The European Commission reports 4.9 GW / 12.1 GWh of utility scale (front of meter) energy storage deployed in 2024, and estimates the total installed energy storage fleet is above 13 GW (context includes multiple storage technologies, with batteries a major growth component).
- A UK government publication from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (EINA 2025, energy storage) provides an official evidence base on UK storage needs and status.
- A UK Parliament briefing cites 4.5 GW of battery storage capacity in Great Britain in Dec 2024, and separately notes the Renewable Energy Planning Database (REPD) count and capacity for recorded operational sites (with caveats about undercounting).
Asia: China’s “new-type energy storage” scale
China’s “new-type energy storage” (a policy category often dominated by electrochemical storage) reached 73.76 GW / 168 GWh by end of 2024, reported in an IEA PVPS document referencing national statistics. China’s State Council English site also reports that installed new-type storage surpassed 70 million kW (70 GW) by the end of 2024.
Who deploys grid batteries: where and by whom
Countries and regions that consistently lead deployment
On an absolute basis, major deployment has been led by large systems with fast-growing renewables and market structures that reward flexibility, including the United States, Germany, United Kingdom, and China, with global tracking and outlooks covered by the International Energy Agency.
